8/3 & 8/4 - Establishing and Sustaining an Emotionally Responsive Program
Click for More
Children and youth, especially those from low-income neighborhoods, are vulnerable to many pressures beyond their control, such as family stress, poverty, violence, racism, and lack of access to health and mental health services. Afterschool and youth development programs are safe havens for youth, providing connections to caring adults, offering engaging programs, fostering deeper commitment to community, and offering or facilitating access to additional support services.
This 2-day institute focuses on strengthening an organization's capacity from an operations and programmatic standpoint to provide emotionally responsive programs. The intended goals of the institute are to improve participating organization's capacity to serve youth more effectively by increasing awareness amongst staff of issues youth face on daily basis, infusing mental health competencies into practices, identifying programmatic supports, and linking the organization to wider health network.
Through articles, case studies and other activities, participants will be working to identify what is a socially and emotionally welcoming environment. Topics include working with family systems, identifying community resources, and creating client sensitive program management systems.
Intended Audience
The intended participant is at the program director level of afterschool program, the person who oversees program design and supervises staff in program delivery. While a participant does not have to be a member of the senior management team, his or her participation should be supported by senior management.
