Barbershop Books Director of Programs
Summary
Barbershop Books, winner of the National Book Foundation's Innovations in Reading Prize, inspires Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun through child-centered, culturally responsive, and community-based programming and content. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs will be an entrepreneurial and dynamic nonprofit leader responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of all programs including: Barbershop Books, Reading So Lit Platform, Reading So Lit - Summer, and the Barbershop Books E-Library. The individual in this role will work collaboratively to support a variety of program stakeholders including but not limited to community partners, barbershop owners, and parents, and to manage program budgets.
Qualifications

Candidates should possess experience and comfort in managing teams, partnerships, overseeing inventory, and managing operations across multiple sites.
Education: Masters Degree Preferred
Leadership:
- 5-7 years of experience leading, managing, and growing program teams
- Demonstrated commitment to Barbershop Books' mission, vision, and values
- Track record of building strategic partnerships and growing impactful programs for non-profits
- Comfortable using technology to manage/track communication, performance, and impact
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
- Experience working in education or knowledge of child development, early childhood education, and early literacy a plus
Team Management and Development:
- Experience managing teams and creating individual development plans
- Experience cultivating positive team culture
- Day-to-day team supervision experience
Program Operational Management:
- Strong track record of leading and managing complex, multifaceted projects through successful completion, achieving measurable successes, and driving program growth
- Experience managing and evaluating successful education programs
- Successful track record managing programs and community engagement in underserved communities
Duties
- Cultivate and steward impactful relationships with new and existing community partners and volunteers
- Work collaboratively to ensure high quality programming and streamlined processes across geographic locations, and community partners
- Oversee national partnership network and represent the organization for media opportunities and events
- Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and strengths-based team culture
- Provide staff support for the Strategy/Programs Committee of the Board of Directors
- Recruit, train, and empower a diverse and skilled team of program staff (approx. 4 members), interns, and volunteers, fostering an environment where all voices are heard and valued.
- Collaboratively establish empowering and equitable quarterly goals with team members that align with the program strategy
- Model and encourage high performance standards, innovative problem-solving, and an open mindset that embraces continuous learning
- Develop, lead, and identify professional development opportunities to promote growth and continuous improvement in a way that uplifts and empowers all team members
- Create and use standard operating procedures to support programmatic efficiency and effectiveness
- Develop and maintain program calendar
- Use CRM and other tools to ensure consistent communication with program stakeholders and accurate tracking of program data
- Regularly evaluate program effectiveness and use data-driven decision-making to improve programs
- Develop and manage program budget and track expenditures in accordance with fiscal policies and procedures
- Track program inventory and ensure cost-effective and efficient procurement and distribution of program materials
- Collaborate with the development team to support local fundraising efforts and track all relevant program data for grant reporting, fundraising, and marketing
- Cultivate long-term/multi-year relationships with program partners and identify opportunities to increase impact and support expansion
- Secure partnership renewals through the maintenance of strong relationships with key stakeholders
- Collect and analyze partner feedback to improve partnership experience
- Facilitate communication between partners and internal teams to ensure alignment and collaboration
- Proactively identify and address program challenges and work efficiently with internal teams to resolve issues raised by program partners
- Ensure all partnership agreements and program materials are up-to-date and properly stored
