Apply to the Willie Mae Music Lab

Willie Mae Music Lab is a year-round, community music, and mentoring program. Programming takes place at 87 Irving Place, Brooklyn, NY 11238, students do not need prior musical experience, and tuition is based on a sliding scale. All classes are taught by experienced women (transgender & cisgender) and gender non-conforming musicians and educators drawn from the Willie Mae Rock Camp volunteer base. Applications are still open for Session 2 that runs March 19 - May 25, 2018 from 4:30-6:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The cycle runs on the DOE calendar with vacations and school-days off. Girls (transgender & cisgender) and gender non-conforming youth ages 8-18 are welcome to apply.

2018 Lights on Afterschool Poster Contest

The Lights On Afterschool poster contest is open. Afterschool artists are asked to consider what they are experiencing in afterschool and how it might shape their future. Kids should think about the prompt, "From Afterschool to…” and provide a drawing that shows their potential future self. The winning artwork will be printed on more than 50,000 posters that will be displayed at more than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events around the world. Youth Communications Summer Workshop for Teen Writers

The 39th Annual Summer Writing Workshop is for New York City teens, ages 15 - 20, who love to write, want to be published, and want to help other teens by sharing their personal stories. Participants receive one-on-one mentoring from a professional editor, write stories about their personal experiences, go on field trips, and make friends with other writers. Their stories are published in the award-winning YCteen and Represent magazines, which are read by thousands of people each year. No prior experience is required, but participants must be able to attend for all six weeks (July 2-August 9, 2018). All participants receive a $1,000 stipend plus a daily MetroCard. The application deadline is May 18, 2018.

Generation NYC - New Resource for NYC Teens

Generation NYC is a new resource for New York City’s young people ages 13 - 24. Via the website teens can find information on a range of topics including school, work, finance, and counseling. Other resources include inspirational stories and information about free events, programs, and activities throughout and near New York City. Generation NYC is part of the Growing Up NYC initiative launched by the NYC Children’s Cabinet.
