WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are actively seeking coaches, college students, and youth development specialists to join our dynamic team of after-school coaches and activity specialists from October 2024 through June 2025. As a valued member of Kids in the Game, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our after-school programming, which focuses on incorporating educational and engaging sports and fitness classes during the traditional after-school hours.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
In the role of an After School Coach or Specialist, your responsibilities will include planning, organizing, and implementing a diverse range of weekly activities for children and young adults, ranging from Pre-K to middle school. These activities aim to promote creative play, skill development, and foster individual, group, and team-based instruction. Additionally, you may also provide assistance with homework and school work during breaks between games and activities. Depending on your availability and skill set, you can expect to work between 10 to 20 hours per week, earning a competitive hourly rate. Our coaches and specialists typically work in various schools throughout the week.
Weekly Schedule: Your weekly schedule as an after-school coach will involve working approximately 10-15 hours per week. These programs are located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The majority of afterschool programs run from 3pm to 6pm, five days a week. Additionally, some programs may require extended half-day schedules once per week, which run from 1pm to 6pm.
Qualifications
WHAT WE ARE GOING TO LOVE ABOUT YOU
Our ideal coach would meet some or all of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in the areas of K-12 Education, Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Possess at least two years of prior coaching experience or several years of experience playing specialized sports in competitive or recreational settings.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to relate to younger children, work with different age groups, and partner with school staff to support children’s physical and emotional needs.
- Have access to a personal device with service that is capable of reliably sending and receiving phone calls, text messages, and email communications from our Program Management and Scheduling Teams for notices and information pertaining to daily work functions.
- Be available to work Monday through Friday during after school hours (3-6pm).
- Up-to-date physical and tuberculosis test documentation will be required before starting.
- You must pass Federal and NY State background checks and be willing to complete Department of Education fingerprinting before starting.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are a plus.
Duties
As an After School Coach or Specialist, your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading age-appropriate sports lessons and group games for 15-20 children in school-based and after-school settings.
- Implementing an engaging curriculum that can be adapted to accommodate various learning styles and developmental needs of the children.
- Displaying patience and utilizing positive behavior management skills to effectively manage children's behaviors and respond to their needs.
- Specialists will be responsible for leading activities and games within their specific field of expertise, such as dance/creative movement, art, sports, etc.
After School Program Types: Kids in the Game facilitates a variety of after school program types throughout the school year. Each program supports youth development through sports and creative play in a variety of activities. The program types include:
- Full After School: Our full after-school program combines a range of activities including sports, homework help, creative movement, dance, STEAM projects, special events, and fitness games-galore into a daily program. After School Coaches will work with Co-Coaches to take students through each activity during the afternoon schedule. They will lead provided curriculum games, activities, and team-time group activities.
- Teams & Classes: Working collaboratively with our school partner’s vision for after-school, Kids in the Game provides physical activities and sports-based group games for after school students. Teams & Classes After School Coaches will prepare and lead these sports and games throughout the afternoon schedule.
- Enrichment After School: Working collaboratively with our school partner’s vision for after-school and existing vendors, Kids in the Game provides specialty classes ranging from Warrior Fitness, Creative Movement, Team Sports, and more! Lead Enrichment Coaches will develop and facilitate group activities in a specific class type for a range of ages. They will be required to collaborate and communicate with students, other after school coaches, coordinators, and the school administration.
