Counseling Specialist, Learn to Work Program

Summary

Position Overview

Queens Community House (QCH) is seeking a skilled and compassionate Counseling Specialist to join our Learning to Work (LTW) program at the Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) at Arts & Business High School. The LTW program supports at-risk youth (ages 17 and older) by providing them with resources, guidance, and opportunities to graduate high school and prepare for postsecondary success.

As a Counseling Specialist, you will play a critical role in delivering social-emotional support, counseling services, and case management to help students thrive academically and personally.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Youth Development, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 3-5 years of experience in youth program management, ideally in a school or community-based setting.
  • Proven experience in program development, staff supervision, and budget management.
  • Strong understanding of youth development principles and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant software; familiarity with Salesforce is a plus.
  • Spanish proficiency is a plus.

Duties

Case Management & Counseling

  • Serve as the primary counselor for a caseload of at-risk students.
  • Provide individualized counseling and group advisory sessions to address academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Refer students to mental health services as needed.
  • Engage families to promote positive outcomes and improve communication.

Program Coordination

  • Plan and facilitate monthly case conferencing meetings with the QCH team to evaluate student progress and address challenges.
  • Collaborate with DOE staff to implement and monitor mental health protocols.
  • Develop and lead workshops on topics such as stress management, healthy relationships, and peer pressure.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate and timely case records using Salesforce.
  • Monitor student attendance, conduct outreach, and document interventions in Salesforce.
  • Serve as the alumni services point person, maintaining connections with graduates and providing ongoing support.

Professional Development & Collaboration

  • Foster an environment that promotes youth development principles.
  • Collaborate with staff from other LTW sites to share best practices and develop innovative program ideas.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance counseling and youth development expertise.

Other Duties

  • Attend QCH staff meetings, trainings, and events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by your supervisor.
