Summary
The part-time Custodian/Driver safely transports program participants and maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe physical environment across all program spaces. This dual role includes daily student pick-ups and drop-offs in compliance with traffic laws and safety regulations, along with routine janitorial and maintenance duties that support site operations. The Custodian/Driver works closely with the Program Director to ensure vehicle safety and facility cleanliness in compliance with Urban Strategies and contracted federal, state, and city agencies.
Qualifications
- Education: Minimum High School Diploma or HSE required.
- Driver’s License: Valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or clean NYS Driver’s License with appropriate passenger endorsements (e.g., S or P endorsement where applicable), an impeccable driving record, and any required endorsements.
- Age: Minimum 25 years of age
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience (child/youth transportation preferred) and prior custodial/facilities maintenance experience.
- Clearances: Must pass all mandatory NYC/NYS background checks, including OCFS Fingerprinting, NYS Statewide Central Register (SCR) Child Abuse screening, Sex Offender Registry check, DMV background check, Medical/Tuberculosis (TB) clearance, and regular drug/alcohol screenings.
- Physical & Soft Skills: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ascend and descend stairs, ladders, and roofs, operate custodial equipment, perform physical labor, and drive safely in local and highway traffic, and shovel snow; dependable, punctual, and highly safety-conscious. Strong active listening, conflict resolution, interpersonal, and communication skills; patient, empathetic, and adaptable with a strong commitment to positive youth development.

Duties
Custodian
- Facility Maintenance & Janitorial Duties: Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, eating areas, and common spaces, including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, and surface disinfecting.
- Supply & Equipment Upkeep: Monitor and restock sanitation supplies, including soap, paper towels, and hand sanitizer; store and handle cleaning chemicals safely in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Safety & Hazard Inspection: Identify, report, and address physical hazards, broken equipment, or maintenance issues immediately to the Program Director to maintain a safe facility.
- Seasonal & Setup Duties: Support site staff with room setups and rearrangements for daily activities or special events; perform minor seasonal groundskeeping, such as keeping walkways clear and safe.
- Professional Development: Participate in scheduled staff and organization meetings, orientations, and required professional development trainings.
Driver
- Student Transportation: Safely operate program vehicles and vans to transport participants between designated schools, program sites, and field trip locations following assigned routes and schedules.
- Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance: Conduct required daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including brakes, tires, lights, fluid levels, and seatbelts; maintain vehicle cleanliness and log mileage and fuel receipts. Ensure vehicles are maintained and inspected by a licensed, pre-approved mechanic.
- Passenger Safety: Ensure all students are properly seated, buckled, and accounted for during transit; maintain orderly behavior on the vehicle and enforce safe boarding and unboarding procedures.
- Professional Development: Participate in scheduled staff and organization meetings, orientations, and required professional development trainings.
- Management may assign additional duties as needed.
