Director of Finance

Summary

The Director of Finance is a senior leader responsible for ensuring NYUL’s financial health, transparency, and sustainability. Reporting to the President & CEO, this role manages daily accounting while driving long-term financial strategy. The Director partners closely with the Development team and the Board’s Finance & Audit Committees to strengthen financial systems, support fundraising, and build a foundation for growth.

Qualifications

  • 7–10+ years of nonprofit finance leadership.
  • Deep experience managing multi-source funding, government grants, and audits.
  • Proven success building systems that increase efficiency and transparency.
  • Strong communicator with experience presenting to senior leadership and Boards.
  • Inclusive leader who builds trust and partnerships across diverse communities.
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a collaborative, lean team.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks, Bill.com, or similar platforms; advanced Excel/MS Office skills.

Duties

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, audits, financial reporting, and compliance.
  • Partner with Development and Program Department to create grant budgets, track restricted/unrestricted funds, and ensure funder reporting accuracy.
  • Present clear, actionable financial updates to the CEO, Board, and funders.
  • Manage cash flow, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and government vouchers.
  • Oversee financial planning for NYUL programs and special events.
  • Implement financial systems and best practices to modernize operations.
  •  Provide guidance, training, and support to program staff in the development, management, and monitoring of program budgets.
  • Supervise accounting staff and manage external vendors/consultants.
