Group Leader, After School

Summary

Queens Community House is seeking enthusiastic and compassionate Group Leaders to join our After School and Summer Camp Youth Development Center Programs. Group Leaders are responsible for directly supervising and guiding elementary and middle school-aged youth, fostering a safe, engaging, and supportive environment. In this role, you will serve as a positive role model, facilitating activities that blend instruction, practice, and creativity. This position is available at multiple locations throughout Queens, NY.

Qualifications

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Enrollment in a related college program (Education, Human Development, Sociology, Social Work, or Human Services) is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of one year of experience leading activities for youth in after-school, summer camp, or similar settings.
  • Skills: Strong group management, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to remain composed and solution-focused in challenging situations.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with skill development strategies and experience working with middle or elementary school-aged youth. Gender-based programming experience is a plus.
  • Personal Qualities: Organized, self-motivated, team-oriented, and professional, with excellent time management and problem-solving abilities.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in basic computer applications, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Clearance: Must pass NYS DOH and DOE Fingerprinting Screening, NYS Clearance Review Background Check, three reference checks, and a physical exam with an updated TB tes

Duties

  • Program Oversight: Understand and enforce program expectations, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment aligned with agency, school, and funder standards.
  • Activity Planning: Develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities that engage participants and achieve program objectives.
  • Team Collaboration: Partner with after-school staff on thematic projects and follow guidance from the Educational Specialist, Director, and Assistant Directors.
  • Communication: Maintain clear communication with the Assistant Director and Director regarding schedule adjustments, classroom needs, and participant concerns.
  • Role Modeling: Exhibit professional and respectful behavior with all stakeholders, including students, families, teachers, and staff, serving as a role model for participants.
  • Homework Assistance: Provide academic support to participants, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed in their studies.
  • Special Events: Assist in organizing and executing special events and projects to enhance the overall program experience.
  • Safety & Security: Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, securing program spaces and materials at the end of each session.
  • Fostering Belonging: Cultivate a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports learning and fosters a sense of belonging.
  • Professional Development: Attend weekly staff meetings and complete required training and professional development hours as needed.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to support the program's overall success.
