Part-Time Literacy Leader

Who we are:

St. Nicks Alliance, a North Brooklyn based community organization, seeks to transform lives of low- and moderate-income people through employment, education, housing, elder care and social services. We do this by delivering impactful services with measurable outcomes to children, adults, and the elderly. As a civic anchor, we carry out this mission within the context of building a sustainable community for all people through the arts, environmental advocacy, and urban planning.

We are currently seeking a part time Literacy Leader.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years' experience leading lessons or structured activities for groups of ten or more children.
• Experience teaching project- or theme-based lessons (helpful but not required).
• Strong self-awareness and an interest in or experience with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in youth work.
• Competency in lesson leadership, including effective transitions, student engagement
• Exceptional communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders (leadership, program directors, colleagues, students, parents, and school faculty).
• Understanding of the strengths and challenges of St. Nicks Alliance students, including familiarity with their neighborhoods, cultures, language, and values.

Duties

• Strictly adhere to DOHMH, OCFS, and CDC best practices and safety protocols to maintain a secure and supportive educational environment.
• Beyond instructional duties, remain actively engaged in monitoring students across all program components, including meals, transitions, outdoor play, field trips, arrival, and dismissal.

• Lead twice-weekly, modified literacy lessons for 10-20 elementary/middle school students using the internally developed curriculum.
• Provide targeted, small-group and individual literacy instruction, incorporating the Science of Reading elements and day school's literacy techniques.
• Develop relationships with the school’s literacy team to align the St. Nicks Alliance literacy curriculum with school goals and initiatives.

• Assess student work (formally and informally) to determine growth and next learning step
• Document student learning and growth for internal and external reporting using notes, work collection, photos, and other records.
• Communicate students’ literacy strengths and challenges to the site director, assistant director, and group leaders to ensure program-wide support.
• Collect and organize youth literacy outcome and attitudinal data (surveys, observations, test scores, etc.) for the School Success Model research program.

• Participate in mandatory professional development sessions to gain familiarity with the curriculum, receive support in tweaking the curriculum for students, and build knowledge and skills related to literacy teaching and working with youth more broadly.
• Participate in coaching sessions with the Instructional Coach or Associate Director of Education to reflect on practice, build an educator’s mindset, and improve outcomes for students.
• Contribute feedback to the Instructional Coach, Curriculum Writers, and Associate Director of Education regarding the success of the literacy curriculum.

• Collaborate with the BK Story Voyager coordinator to facilitate book selection, manage educational programming, and maintain correspondence with site administration.
• Establish regular communication with the reading specialist, tutors, teaching artists, or other individuals in the afterschool program to align instruction.
• Collaborate with the school SEL transformational coach to embed SEL into instruction.
