Part-Time Social Worker

Summary

NYJTL is seeking a compassionate and skilled Part-Time Social Worker to support the emotional wellness of elementary-aged students in our school-based afterschool programs. This on-site role focuses on student mental health, staff support, and fostering a positive, trauma-informed school culture. The Social Worker will collaborate closely with the Site Director and afterschool team to implement restorative practices, provide short-term interventions, and lead small group sessions aligned with our Mental Health Skill Building curriculum.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution
  • 1-2 years of experience working with children in school-based or afterschool settings 
  • Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning (SEL), and restorative practices 
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills 
  • Cultural humility and experience working with diverse communities
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution
  • New York State LMSW (or willingness to obtain within the first year)
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in NYC schools
  • Familiarity with NYC DOE/DOH afterschool programming

Duties

  • Provide short-term emotional and behavioral support to students during afterschool hours 
  • Facilitate small group sessions on topics like emotional regulation, peer relationships, and coping skills 
  • Collaborate with Site Directors to identify student needs and integrate trauma-informed programming 
  • Coach staff on best practices in restorative responses and SEL strategies 
  • Coordinate with caregivers and school-day staff to ensure continuity of student support 
  • Support implementation and analysis of pre- and post-program SEL surveys
