Summary
NYJTL is seeking a compassionate and skilled Part-Time Social Worker to support the emotional wellness of elementary-aged students in our school-based afterschool programs. This role is based on-site and focuses on student mental health, staff support, and nurturing a positive school culture. The Social Worker will collaborate closely with the Site Director and afterschool team to implement trauma-informed and restorative practices, provide short-term interventions, and lead small group sessions aligned with our Mental Health Skill Building curriculum.
Qualifications
- MSW, LMSW, or BSW with significant experience in child or youth services
- Experience working with children in educational or afterschool settings
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning (SEL), and restorative practices
- Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Cultural humility and comfort working with students and families from diverse backgrounds
Preferred:
- Bilingual in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in NYC schools
- Familiarity with NYC DOE/DOH afterschool programming
Duties
- Provide short-term emotional and behavioral support to students during afterschool hours
- Facilitate small groups focused on emotional regulation, peer relationships, and stress management
- Collaborate with Site Directors to identify student needs and support trauma-informed programming
- Coach afterschool staff on best practices in restorative and trauma-informed approaches
- Coordinate with caregivers and school-day personnel to ensure continuity of support
- Support the implementation and analysis of pre- and post-program surveys to assess SEL growth
- Participate in weekly reflective supervision to deepen practice and skill-building
