Part-Time Social Worker - Afterschool Program

Summary

NYJTL is seeking a compassionate and skilled Part-Time Social Worker to support the emotional wellness of elementary-aged students in our school-based afterschool programs. This role is based on-site and focuses on student mental health, staff support, and nurturing a positive school culture. The Social Worker will collaborate closely with the Site Director and afterschool team to implement trauma-informed and restorative practices, provide short-term interventions, and lead small group sessions aligned with our Mental Health Skill Building curriculum.

Qualifications

  • MSW, LMSW, or BSW with significant experience in child or youth services
  • Experience working with children in educational or afterschool settings
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning (SEL), and restorative practices
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Cultural humility and comfort working with students and families from diverse backgrounds
Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in NYC schools
  • Familiarity with NYC DOE/DOH afterschool programming

Duties

  • Provide short-term emotional and behavioral support to students during afterschool hours
  • Facilitate small groups focused on emotional regulation, peer relationships, and stress management
  • Collaborate with Site Directors to identify student needs and support trauma-informed programming
  • Coach afterschool staff on best practices in restorative and trauma-informed approaches
  • Coordinate with caregivers and school-day personnel to ensure continuity of support
  • Support the implementation and analysis of pre- and post-program surveys to assess SEL growth
  • Participate in weekly reflective supervision to deepen practice and skill-building
