School Social Work Intern

Summary

KAVI seeks qualified Social Work interns within our Brooklyn-based public high schools. The social
work interns will liaise with students, school administration, and KAVI staff to create supportive
relationships, promote continuity of care, and minimize conflict in the school setting. Social Work
interns will apply therapeutic practices within the school setting, provide student support and
interventions, and co-facilitate conflict resolution discussion groups in partnership with a School
Violence Prevention Specialist. Social Work interns integrate the functions of case assessment and
advocacy in the school setting for program participants.
As a KAVI school programs Social Work intern, you will be a cohort member of the KAVI site team of
Violence Intervention professionals, working alongside a school Violence Prevention Specialist and the
School Programs Manager within a school setting. With training, support, and utilizing KAVI
curricula, you will shape and facilitate conflict resolution workshops, provide mediation and
mentorship support to students, and manage a small caseload of KAVI VIP participants. Workshops
and sessions are held in person at your assigned KAVI School Site.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Good writing skills and the ability to maintain correspondence with a variety of agencies,
    clients, and stakeholders
  • Highly developed ability for problem-solving
  • Knowledgeable in crisis intervention principles and practices
  • Demonstrates adaptability to perform a variety of duties, occasionally changing from one task
    to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
  • Ability to maintain integrity and professional rapport towards students, school staff, and other
    KAVI team members
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice system
  • A passion for the work of community development, youth development, and social equity
  • A desire for professional growth
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Basic computer skills are a plus but not required
  • A basic ability to work independently and or as a team player
  • Attention to detail and customer service skills are a must
  • Must be in an accredited Social Work or School Guidance Counselor program

Duties

  • Design, plan, track participant's progress, facilitate and conflict resolution workshops for young people, using the KAVI Violence Prevention curriculum
  • Attend team and staff meetings
  • Provide individual therapy sessions with students by referral.
  • Regularly update your caseload management spreadsheet. Communicate availability and
    actively engage with your site social worker and supervisor.
  • Provide input to and support the development of program materials, ensuring they are
    effective for the relevant youth audience.
  • Support young people in navigating life, making wise choices, and understanding their rights
    and responsibilities.
  • Strengthen the conflict resolution capacity of young people in KAVI programs.
  • Maintain appropriate notes to document outcomes of meetings, conflict resolution sessions
  • Debrief sessions with the field supervisor and School Programs Manager.
  • Ensure professional standards are upheld, including KAVI principles, Child Safe Standards,
    and the Code of Ethical Practice framework in Youth Empowerment Work.
