Teaching Assistant

Imogen Foundation

Summary

Bring your energy, creativity, and kindness to Imogen Foundation! We’re looking for compassionate, dependable Teaching Assistants with experience in education or childcare to help elementary school students feel safe, connected, and excited to learn.
As a trusted daily presence in our NYC public school programs, you’ll build meaningful relationships and create a welcoming environment where children feel heard and valued. You’ll support experienced teachers in planning and leading specialty classes, lead recreational activities and sports, and guide students through arrival, snack, transitions, and dismissal.
Our programs put student voice and choice at the center of learning. You’ll help children explore their interests, navigate challenges, practice kindness, and build confidence while bringing your own talents and enthusiasm to each afternoon.
Ideal candidates are punctual, organized, personable, and ready to take initiative. Above all, you enjoy working with children and understand the difference a caring adult can make.
Gain hands-on school experience, strengthen your skills through professional development, and explore opportunities to grow with an expanding nonprofit.

Qualifications

  • Successful candidates should have experience working with children, preferably in an afterschool setting, supported by strong professional references. Two or more years of classroom experience or current enrollment in an education or related degree program is preferred. Candidates should bring strong academic skills and practical experience in their subject area; professional experience is a plus.
  • Teaching Assistants should be able to create an environment that encourages creativity, verbal communication, independent exploration, self-confidence, and self-awareness while helping children resolve conflicts through problem-solving. They should be open to learning from their experiences and adapting their approach to meet children’s needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage daily responsibilities and respond to unexpected situations are essential, along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

Duties

  • Teaching Assistants help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging afterschool experience for every child. They greet students during snack time, take attendance, and guide transitions between activities and through end-of-day dismissal, providing consistent supervision and care.
  • Working alongside teachers, Activity Specialists, and Education Specialists, Teaching Assistants help prepare and implement daily activities that encourage participation, connection, and learning. They also collaborate with teachers, staff, and consultants to support children’s individual needs, including assisting with assessments and the development or implementation of individualized education plans, as appropriate.
  • Teaching Assistants maintain open, ongoing communication with the Program Director and program team, sharing observations, discussing student needs, and coordinating support. Their attentiveness, teamwork, and compassion help ensure that children feel supported, included, and ready to participate.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit your resume and a brief statement sharing your experience working with children, why you’re interested in joining Imogen Foundation, and any talents or interests you would bring to our afterschool programs. Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview.
