PASE & Afterschool Honor Geoffrey Canada with Richard Murphy Leadership Award

Posted by Anne Cleary

On April 30th, leaders from the afterschool field honored Geoffrey Canada, President of Harlem Children’s Zone, with the Richard Murphy Leadership Award for his contribution to youth services.

Canada, whose career includes decades of extraordinary leadership and innovation, remembered Murphy as a brave and caring mentor. The Honorable David N. Dinkins, 106th Mayor of New York City, received the inaugural award last year and presented this year’s award to Canada. Established in 2017, the award serves as a “lifetime achievement” recognition for individuals in the afterschool field who have made extraordinary accomplishments in youth services and who exemplify the intelligence, enthusiasm, and commitment to New York City children that Richard Murphy, former Commissioner of the Department of Youth Services, embodied. His influence continues to inspire. PASE’s founder Michele Cahill, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Shawn Dove, CEO of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement, and Reverend Dr. Alfonso Wyatt delivered impassioned speeches about Murphy’s lasting impact in their lives and on the youth services field. We thank Neuberger Berman for hosting the award reception.
