NSLA State of Summer Learning: 2015 State Policy Snapshot

National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) has released a State of Summer Learning: 2015 State Policy Snapshot. The end of the school year marks the start of summer slide in math and reading for millions of young people across of the country. Many school districts, communities, and states across the country are undertaking major steps to keep kids learning throughout the summer. In 2015, NSLA tracked 172 state bills affecting summer learning. This report summarizes key themes to emerge from these bills. Themes include sponsoring programs that focus on middle and high school; engaging students in career exploration; and establishing and expanding commissions and councils to study, develop, and implement strategic plans for learning outside of the traditional school day.

Summer Youth Employment Program

The 2016 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) application is now available online. SYEP provides New York City youth ages 14 - 24 with paid summer employment for up to six weeks in July and August. Participants work in a variety of entry-level jobs including: government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, non-profits, small businesses, museums, sports enterprises, and retail organizations. The program also provides workshops on job readiness, career exploration, financial literacy and opportunities to continue education and social growth. Deadline to submit applications is April 15, 2016.

Girls Inc. NYC Free Summer Camp

Girls Inc is hosting a free summer camp for rising 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade girls. The camp will take place at Urban Assembly Institute of Math & Science for Young Women in Brooklyn from July 5 - July 20, 2016. Programming includes financial literacy, media literacy, self defense, sexual health, visual arts, dance, weekly field trips, and more. Application deadline is June 1, 2016. SuperSTARS Leadership Academy

PowerPlay's 2016-2017 SuperSTARS Leadership Academy is accepting applications. The Leadership Academy is a year long, girls-only program with a 6-week summer intensive that combines introductory sports and fitness with college prep, personal and professional development, and fun educational activities and field trips. This summer program is targeted towards rising 10th and 11th graders (but open to rising 9th-12th) and supplemented through the 2016-2017 academic year with workshops, youth-mentorship and service-learning opportunities. Scholarships are provided for all accepted participants to cover all program costs. The submission deadline is April 1, 2016.

YMCA's Summer Teen Career Connection Program

The West Side YMCA has developed a paid internship program for youth to provide them access to a spectrum of careers. Teen Career Connection, through an intensive process, identifies youth citywide to place in New York City companies, agencies and nonprofit organizations such as Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Morvillo LLP, Manhattan Borough President Office, The Clinton Foundation, Children’s Brain Tumor Institute, Susan G. Komen for the Cure NYC and numerous other outstanding organizations. Application deadline is March 11, 2016. Please visit the Teen Career Connection site for further details and the application.

All Star Code Summer Intensive Program

The All Star Code Summer Intensive Programs runs July 11 – August 19, 2016 and is free for all accepted students. Programming includes learning to design mobile and desktop websites, taking part in the robotics revolution, building apps that solve real world problems, meeting tech professionals from Google, the Flatiron School, Yelp, and more. Applicants should be male high school juniors or seniors during the 2016-2017 school year. Preference given to Black and Latino male students. The program also covers lunch and daily transportation. Applications are due March 6, 2016.
