Lights On Afterschool Webmaker Challenge

Mozilla, the global nonprofit organization behind Firefox, has teamed up with the Afterschool Alliance to celebrate Lights on Afterschool, taking place on October 23, 2014, with the Lights On Afterschool Webmaker Challenge. This challenge gives afterschool program participants the chance to unleash their creativity - and learn some coding - by designing and publishing digital posters in support of Lights On Afterschool and their afterschool program, using Mozilla’s Webmaker platform. Six participating programs will be chosen at random to win $500.

Panel on Outstanding Nonprofit Board Leadership

On October 23, 2014, the Center for Nonprofit Strategy & Management at Baruch College School of Public Affairs and VCG Governance Matters are co-sponsoring Outstanding Nonprofit Board Leadership: A Conversation With the Winners of the 2014 Brooke W. Mahoney Award for Outstanding Board Leadership. The winner and finalists of the 2014 award - BronxWorks, East Harlem Tutorial Program, GO Project!, Reach Out & Read of Greater New York, and Urban Pathways - will sit down with David Birdsell, Dean of the Baruch College School of Public Affairs and Chair of VCG Governance Matters, for a frank conversation about what makes their Boards - and their organizations - successful. Tickets cost $15 for members of VCG Governance Matters, $20 for non-members, and $5 for students, and registration is required.

National Geographic Online Meetups on Geo-Education

National Geographic is holding a series of online meetups for educators around the world to share ideas and gain innovative teaching strategies around geo-education, which includes the in-school and out-of-school experiences that teach young people to understand how our world functions and how people, places, and environments interconnect. Meetups are generally held on the first Tuesday of each month, and each month has a different theme. Educators across disciplines will discuss how to incorporate these themes in their lessons and activities. Upcoming themes include Outdoor Learning and Environmental Stewardship on November 5, 2014, World Languages and Cultures on December 2, 2014, and Community and Civic Engagement on January 6, 2014Registration is required.
