David McGoy, CFRE, is a nonprofit management consultant, trainer, and coach with over 30 years of experience in fundraising, governance, capacity building, and program development. He has advised and supported hundreds of nonprofit leaders to help them design impactful programs, strengthen board governance, and improve fundraising performance in their organizations. As the Director of Strategic Growth at Cause Effective, he is responsible for developing, implementing, and expanding programs and initiatives that advance racial and social equity in nonprofit fundraising and philanthropy. He is currently serving as the Interim Executive Director of the Sandy Ground Historical Society, a Staten Island-based organization that preserves the history of the country’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement of free Black Americans.
David is a committed advocate, speaker, and writer in the effort to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in fundraising and philanthropy. He was instrumental in the development and publication of Cause Effective’s groundbreaking 2019 report, “Money, Power, and Race: The Lived Experiences of Fundraisers of Color,” which shed light on the inequities and power imbalances that leaders and fundraisers of color often face. The report led to the launch of Preparing the Next Generation, a suite of programs that has since supported 250 nonprofit leaders of color in navigating systemic inequities and overcoming social and cultural biases that adversely impact their funding relationships. He currently serves on the governance committee of the Association for Nonprofit Specialists, the board of trustees of Richmond University Medical Center, and teaches grant writing and fundraising as an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University.
