The Art & Science of Effective Youth Programs: A Groundbreaking Conversation to Promote Social Emotional Outcomes For Youth events

The Art & Science of Effective Youth Programs takes place on April 24, 2017 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm at the CUNY Graduate Center. This symposium will engage youth development practitioners in conversations about how to strengthen social emotional learning (SEL) for youth based on recent findings from a large-scale, national collective impact study conducted by Algorhythm, with the support of Youth INC and News Corp. The goal of this symposium is to examine the four key drivers of success in promoting SEL, bring these data to “life,” lifting up our collective strategies and tips for success. RSVP is required.

City of Science

The World Science Festival and Con Edison present the third annual City of Science event, a larger-than-life STEM exhibition that travels through the boroughs and is coming to Brooklyn in December. Join them at the Park Slope Armory YMCA on December 15, 2019 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm as they walk on water, blast balls into orbit, and explore the inner workings of the human brain. Their activity partners will demonstrate the power of STEM to kids of all ages with exciting interactive exhibits and hands-on activities. RVSP is encouraged, but not required.

TKU Codes: In Celebration of CSEd Week

Join Tech Kids Unlimited, a nonprofit organization that teaches technology to students who learn differently, for a day all about code. On December 8, 2019 from 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm, to kick off Computer Science Education Week, students ages 7 - 21 with special needs can spend a day exploring coding and creating digital projects. Parents will also be able to join a workshop to learn graphic design skills. There will be free swag, food provided, and more. Register or contact info@techkidsunlimited.org to learn more.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Events

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has two upcoming free events. Celebrate the Apollo 12 moon mission and the advances of space science, as we once again look at traveling back to the Moon. On November 23, 2019 from 11:00am-3:00pm, New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) and Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum educators will lead activities and discussions on the challenges of space exploration and the future of space travel. On December 7, 2019 from 11:00am-1:30pm, parents, teachers, school administrators and teens from New York City are invited to learn more about the Intrepid Museum’s no-cost teen leadership programs.

The College Completion Innovation Fund

Graduate NYC is hosting an informational webinar on November 20, 2019 at 2:00pm about their upcoming funding cycle and how the College Completion Innovation Fund can support work around ensuring that more students earn their college degrees. They will be joined by design thinking experts from Education Design Lab who will provide a brief introduction to the organization's student-centered frameworks.

Lobbying and Electoral Activity Training

HSC, Candid, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and Nonprofit New York are hosting a lobbying training on November 7, 2019 from 2:30pm to 5:00pm. This training covers the nuts and bolts of the City and State lobby laws, including recent updates, what constitutes lobbying, and when and how lobbying should be reported. Find out whether your organization has engaged in "lobbying activity" and, if so, what you need to do comply with the law. Registration is open.

Collaborative for Advancing Youth Development's 2019 State of the Field Conference focused on Youth Participation in NYC takes place December 10, 2019 from 9:00am-4:00pm. The conference will explore the possibilities that emerge when our city combines decades of deep-rooted community-youth development work, a rich civic ecosystem, and a rights-based approach to youth participation. A Night With Angie Thomas

Powerhouse YA author Angie Thomas joins Brooklyn Public Library on October 25, 2019 from 7:00pm-9:00pm to discuss themes from her two New York Times bestselling novels about powerful young women who use their voices to effect change. Angie will be in conversation with BPL YA librarian Adeeba Afshan Rana. Copies of her books will be available and Angie will be signing after the event. RSVP to join.

The Cooper Union STEM Outreach program is hosting a high school engineering education workshop during the American Society for Engineering Education conference on November 1, 2019 from 3:00pm–5:00pm.
