SUNY Financial Aid Days

The State University of New York (SUNY) is offering two Financial Aid Days to assist students and their families in applying for financial aid and completing the FAFSA. The free workshops take place on January 16 and February 20, 2016 and are available at 44 locations throughout New York State.  Students and families are encouraged to pre-register online or call the SUNY Recruitment Response Center at 800-342-3811.

ACLU Summer Advocacy Institute

The ACLU’s Summer Advocacy Institute will bring together a diverse group of students entering their junior and senior years of high school from across the United States to participate in an advanced, firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. Through an intensive 7-day program, students will learn directly from lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, journalists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and liberties critical to a free and open society. The application is free for those who apply before February 15, 2016 and there are scholarships available to cover program costs. The institute takes place June 19 - 25, 2016 at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

18th Annual Awards for Youth in Foster Care Now Accepting Entries

Youth Communication is sponsoring the 18th Annual Awards for Youth in Foster Care to promote a more positive image of New York City foster youth among agency staff, youth workers, and the general public. Fifteen young people will be awarded prize money at a ceremony in spring 2016. Five grand prize winners will receive $1,000 each, and 10 additional winners will receive prizes of $500 to $700 each. Youth must write two essays, one 1,000 words or fewer and the other 500 words or fewer. Entrants must also submit a nomination letter from an adult saying why they deserve to win. Any current or former foster youth in the New York City system is eligible. The entry deadline is March 4, 2016
