Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum​ Free Teen Programs

Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum offers free teen programs throughout the academic school year to high school students. October offerings include: Design Fest on October 13, 2018 where audiences of all ages are invited to play designer, learn new design skills, and explore the museum; Teen Design Fair on October 16, 2018 where teens learn about design careers and education opportunities from National Design Award winners and jurors, professional designers, and college representatives; and Design Scholars, a program offering hands-on workshops with professional designers, design studio visits, and college tours. Applications for both semesters of the Design Scholars program are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Forwards' Free Coding Workshop for High School Girls

Forwards, the R Foundation task force to advance the participation of women and other under-represented groups in the R community of statistical computing and graphics, is hosting a free coding workshop for high school junior and senior girls on October 27, 2018. Participants will learn about data science as a profession and be introduced to coding in R through an investigation of real-world data involving NYC transportation systems. Free Arts & Leadership Program for Girls & Young Women in Southwest Bronx

New Settlement Apartments' Program for Girls & Young Women offers free classes for girls - ages 11 - young adult - after-school, evenings and Saturdays. Prospective participants are invited to attend an orientation with or without a guardian, September 20, 2018 from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm at 1514 Townsend Ave, Bronx, NY 10452. Classes begin the week of September 24, 2018, and include dramatic writing & performance, leadership, STEM, Hip-Hop dance, Healthy Relationships + College Access (G.O.A.L.), performance poetry, adventure learning trips, and more. Teen Writers: Publish Your Stories in YCteen or Represent

Youth Communication's two award-winning magazines are recruiting teen writers this fall. Teens work with an editor to write and publish personal stories about their lives, and reported stories about issues that affect young people. YCteen magazine is distributed to hundreds of high schools, libraries, and community-based organizations in New York City. Applications for the fall 2018 internship are due on September 28, 2018. Represent is a magazine written by and for teens in foster care. New and current writers are invited to an Open House at Youth Communication on September 24, 2018. NYC SALT Photography Program Application Open

NYC SALT has openings for high school students in their free photography workshop and residency programs that start at the end of September 2018 and run through early June 2019. This 36-week Residency Program focuses on photography and college preparation and is intended for students who wish to deepen their understanding and passion for the visual arts. Application deadline is September 21, 2018. In the Workshop Program youth learn how to use a camera, light, find their vision, their voice to tell a story, and more. The program includes field trips to meet some of the leaders working in the visual industry and gain a better understanding of career paths in photography and visual communication.
