Partnership for After School Education

As Director of Immigrant Services for PRY, Heddy has helped develop the direction and focus of the agency for over a decade as she has shaped a comprehensive program of immigrant services in Brooklyn.  As an immigrant from Argentina who quickly secured a master’s degree from Hunter College, she brought an array of credentials and experience to her job.  Her creativity, innovation, and outstanding teaching skills have enabled PRY to successfully respond to a growing population of immigrant families in Brooklyn neighborhoods.  Her ability to captivate, motivate, and develop skills in young children, teens and adults has resulted in the establishment of model pre-school and toddler classes, recognized teen programs.  Knowing that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers, she organized parenting support groups, including one just for fathers.  Thousands of children and youth have become better prepared for school and acclimated to their new surroundings and more than 500 adults have gained confidence in speaking English, securing jobs, and becoming citizens.  The list of her accomplishments goes on, and suffice it to say that from Brooklyn to New York State, to Puerto Rico, she has trained groups to do similar work.  One mother from Guatemala summed it up saying, “If we stretch, we can reach the stars.  I never imagined all I could accomplish until Heddy gave me the keys to open all doors.”
